The Galaxy suffered a crippling defeat at the hands of Orlando City S.C. Los Angeles lost 4-0 to the newest MLS team, giving Orlando City their first win at home in front of a crowd of about 40,000 people. Although it was a glorious day for Orlando, it turned out to be a nightmare for the defending MLS cup champions. The opening goal came off of a cross from the right towards former Stoke City winger, Brek Shea, who used his head to direct the ball into the middle of the six yard box, leading to Eric Avila’s header, which gave Orlando City a 1-0 lead. As the half progressed, things didn’t get better for the Galaxy. In the 34th minute, Kaka sliced through the defense at the midway point of the field. The only man left to stop Kaka was defender Tommy Meyer, who decided to take a gamble and slide in to make the tackle but missed, leaving Kaka with a one on one opportunity against goalie Jaime Penedo. Kaka passed the ball to his right, leading to a tap in for Cycle Larin, making it 2-0. The game went from bad to worse for the Galaxy in the second half. Once again, it was Ricardo Kaka wreaking havoc on the Galaxy’s defense. Kaka received the ball in about 30 yards away from goal with nobody in sight and was promptly fouled by Jaime Penedo. The ref instantly awarded a penalty to Orlando City. Kaka took the penalty and easily put the ball into the left side of the net, with Jaime Penedo diving the opposite way, making it 3-0 with over thirty five minutes left to play in the game. Orlando City then put the nail in the coffin with a goal from El Salvadorian midfielder, Darwin Cerén. Orlando City defender Rafael Ramos crossed the ball in from the right-hand side, which was cleared by Tommy Meyer directly to Cerén. When Ceren received the ball, he struck it from about 30 yards out. The ball was originally headed towards Jaime Penedo’s right, but was redirected off of a deflection from Tommy Meyer, which made it 4-0 in favor of Orlando City. The Galaxy’s defense struggled mightily. Jaime Penedo was left stranded by his defenders on multiple occasions. The Los Angeles Galaxy defenders did not do their due diligence in marking their man, and they suffered because of it. Analyst Taylor Twellman said during the game, “If it weren’t for Jaime Penedo, Orlando would be up 6-0 in this game.” After the game, the man of the match, Kaka said “It’s a perfect day for the supporters. They needed some joy, so today is a special day for Orlando City.” The former Brazilian international, finished the game with one goal and one assist.
