Channel 2 sports director Zach Klein broke the news Saturday evening that Danny Ferry had been cleared of any wrongdoing after an internal investigation by the law firm the Hawks hired to look into the incident. Klein was also first to report this week the Hawks and Ferry were parting ways. In an exclusive one-on-one interview, Klein sat down with Ferry to talk to him about the last nine months, during which the now former general manager has remained silent on the allegations. “This has been a long emotional nine months. There is some relief that there is a resolution,” Ferry told Klein. “It’s been hard on my family. I have a wife and five kids, four teenage daughters and the emotion of that early on for them and concern and worry for them. I tried to do right by Luol and be involved in the community and get to know some people has been really fulfilling and really good.Click & Close Ads Click & Close Ads Ferry came under fire in September after Channel 2 Action News obtained quotes, then an audio recording of several racially charged comments he made during a June conference call with team owners and executives about free-agent prospect Luol Deng. Klein: “You say on that call: ‘He's a good guy overall, but he's not perfect. He's got some African in him and I don't say that in a bad way, he’s like a guy who would have a nice store out front that's beautiful and great, but he may be selling some counterfeit stuff behind ya.’ You’ve stated all along that you were reading from a scouting report. Can you share who the scout was?” Ferry: “I don’t think it’s appropriate for me to give the sources, just as you wouldn’t give the sources for what you do. The scout goes into that knowing or a source goes into that knowing it’s confidential. Klein: “Of the five page scouting report, you chose to use that specific part of the scouting report. Why was that phrase so important to you to convey in that conference call?” Ferry: “I don’t want to minimize the fact that I made a mistake. I shouldn’t have repeated those words. They were harmful and hurtful mainly and especially for Luol, but there was a lot more said on that call and other reports referenced and my personal opinion on Luol, which was very positive both as a player and as a person, were expressed during that call. It’s unfortunate that all those things were not part of all this.” Ferry eventually took an indefinite leave of absence from the team. Klein will have much more on this exclusive interview throughout the day on Channel 2 Action News and WSBTV.com.Click & Close Ads Click & Close Ads
